South Korea Air Force Jets Accidentally Drop Bombs on Civilian Area, Injuring 15
Pocheon, South Korea – In a shocking incident during military exercises, eight Mk82 bombs dropped by South Korean Air Force fighter jets accidentally landed in a civilian district in Pocheon on Thursday, injuring 15 people and damaging homes and a church. The bombs, each weighing 500 kilograms, were intended for a designated shooting range but fell outside the target area due to a pilot error, according to military officials.

The accident occurred during joint live-fire exercises involving two KF-16 fighter jets. A military official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, revealed that the pilot had entered incorrect coordinates, leading to the bombs being dropped in the wrong location. Each jet released four bombs, all of which detonated upon impact, local media reported.
The bombs caused significant damage to residential properties and a church in the area. The fire agency reported that 15 people were injured, including two who sustained serious injuries. Emergency services rushed to the scene to provide medical assistance and assess the damage.

Pocheon, located approximately 40 kilometers northeast of Seoul, is near the heavily militarized border with North Korea. The area is frequently used for military exercises due to its proximity to the border. However, local residents have long protested against the noise, disturbance, and potential dangers posed by the nearby training grounds, as reported by local media.
In a statement, the South Korean Air Force expressed deep regret over the incident, saying, “We are sorry for the damage caused by the abnormal drop accident, and we wish the injured a speedy recovery.” The military has launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the error and to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Authorities announced that live-fire exercises would be suspended until a thorough understanding of the incident is achieved. However, the accident is not expected to affect the upcoming major joint military exercises between South Korea and the United States, scheduled to begin on Monday.
