Passenger plane crashes near the Kazakh city of Aktau – 29 survive

29 people survived the crash of a passenger plane with 67 people on board, which crashed on Wednesday near the airport of the Kazakh city of Aktau, on the shores of the Caspian Sea, according to Kazakhstan’s emergency services.

The number of confirmed fatalities has risen to 38, said Kazakh Deputy Prime Minister Kanat Bozumbayev, who heads the state commission to investigate the reasons for the crash. “The situation is not good at all, there are 38 dead,” Boubmaev said at a meeting with Azerbaijani representatives in the city of Aktau, on the shores of the Caspian Sea, according to the Tengrinews portal.

According to Kazakh authorities, the crashed aircraft is an Embraer 190 belonging to Azerbajan Airlines, which was en route from Baku to Grozny, the capital of the Russian republic of Chechnya, but was diverted.

Kazakhstan’s Transport Ministry said that among the passengers on the aircraft were 37 Azerbaijanis, 16 Russians, 6 Kazakhs and 3 Kyrgyz.

UPDATE: Putin apologizes for the “tragic incident” of the plane that killed 38 people, but does not clarify the cause. The Russian leader estimates that a Ukrainian attack and the Russian response could have prevented an initial landing attempt in Grozny.
