Myanmar to deliver verdict on Thai detainees on October 1

KAWTHAUNG, 21 September 2012 (NNT) – Myanmar’s Kawthaung Court is scheduled to deliver a verdict on the trial of two Thai suspects charged with narcotics possession on October 1.

The hearing has been postponed from September 10 due to officials’ engagement in the preparation for the granting of pardon to 83 other Thai detainees. The 83 villagers have returned safely to Thailand since September 18.

The two Thai villagers have been identified as Kalaya Thawo, 49, and Thanom Chansamut, 52, from Surat Thani and Chumphon provinces respectively. The Myanmar court has already handed down a verdict, sentencing Mr Thanom to 7 years in prison for firearm possession.
