BANGKOK, 11 April 2012 (NNT) – Three Andaman coastal areas in Thailand now at risk of being attacked by a tsunami are Phuket, Phra Thong and Tarutao Islands after an 8.9-magnitude quake hit off the coast of the nearby Sumatra Island today.

Spokesman of the Department of Mineral Resources, Adichart Surinkham, says there have not yet been any reports of a tsunami at the affected Sumatra Island but all parties are on standby in case giant waves occur. The spokesman says if the Earth’s plate slides horizontally, there are slim chances of a tsunami, but if two of the Earth’s plates collide, a tsunami is very likely.

According to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, three locations in Thailand have a high tendency to be hit by a tsunami, including Phuket where giant waves are expected at 17.18 hrs, Phra Thong Island in Phang Nga province at 18.23 hrs and Tarutao Island in Satun province at 18.56. The center has issued a warning to 28 countries.
