Chinese National Held in Phuket Over Suspected Counterfeit $100 Bills
PHUKET – A Chinese woman has been detained and barred from leaving Thailand after nearly fifty US $100 banknotes she presented at a currency exchange in Phuket failed authenticity checks, raising fresh concerns over the circulation of counterfeit foreign currency on the island.

The incident occurred at a Lion Exchange counter inside Central Phuket, where staff grew suspicious during a routine verification process about the texture and security features of the bills. They immediately alerted the police, who responded and interviewed the woman, identified as Li. Officers seized the banknotes as evidence and imposed a temporary travel restriction on Li while the investigation proceeds.
According to her statement to police, Li claimed she had stored the dollars for approximately ten years and brought them from Macau, where she had previously visited casinos. She stated she had not attempted to exchange the money earlier and was unaware the bills might be counterfeit. Her account will form a key part of the ongoing investigation as forensic experts analyze the notes.
Phuket has witnessed similar cases in recent months, contributing to heightened vigilance among currency exchange operators. In March, a Russian woman was detained for attempting to exchange counterfeit US dollars, and earlier this year, an Uzbek national was placed on a wanted list in connection with similar allegations.
These repeated incidents have alarmed local authorities and businesses, prompting calls for strengthened verification procedures in tourist-heavy areas. Industry representatives confirm that enhanced checking protocols have become standard practice to protect both operators and customers. Police have urged all exchange counters to remain alert and report any suspicious transactions immediately.
A forensic examination of Li’s banknotes is now underway. Depending on the results, she may face further questioning or potential charges under Thai law. Authorities will also assess whether there is any link between this case and previous counterfeit currency incidents on the island.

Until the investigation concludes, Li remains under a temporary travel ban as part of standard procedure in such cases. Exchange operators across Phuket are expected to maintain increased scrutiny on high-value foreign currency transactions.
