Another Thai National Tortured to Death in Cambodian Scam Compound
BANGKOK – A Thai man has become the latest victim of systematic torture in a Cambodian scam center, marking the second such death reported within days in the same Poipet facility. The victim, identified as Sarawut “Toto” from Samut Prakan, was found dead in Building B of the compound—the same location where 26-year-old Suda Chonlaket was recently confirmed dead.

According to the Immanuel Foundation, which coordinates assistance for Thais abroad, Sarawut was brutally assaulted by gang members using metal rods and electric prods after failing to meet scamming quotas. The organization reported that the torture was ordered by a Chinese supervisor overseeing the criminal operation. The foundation has criticized Cambodian authorities for failing to investigate the facility despite repeated reports of abuse.

The case came to light through an escaped victim who contacted the foundation, revealing that the gang had planned to secretly bury Sarawut’s body in Phnom Penh to destroy evidence.

The pattern appears consistent with previous reports: Thai workers are lured to these centers with promises of employment, then subjected to severe punishment, including torture that sometimes proves fatal, when they fail to extort hundreds of thousands of baht from targets through fraudulent schemes.
