Bangkok MRT Station Floods During Heavy Rain, Exposing Construction Flaw
BANGKOK — Commuters at the Thailand Cultural Centre MRT station faced chaotic scenes on Friday evening as floodwaters inundated the concourse level following a torrential downpour. Videos and photos shared on social media showed passengers wading through ankle-deep water to access ticket counters and platforms, though train services remained operational.
Heavy Rains and Flooding Grip Northern Thailand
The flooding, which occurred around 6 p.m., was attributed to construction work on a pedestrian passage linking the station to the AIA building. The Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) explained that an air vent on the tunnel roof—at street level—allowed rainwater from Ratchadaphisek Road to cascade into the station after rainfall exceeded 100 millimeters.
MRTA crews responded by sealing the vent with sandbags and conducting cleanup operations. The authority emphasized that the station’s original design included flood prevention systems and was not structurally deficient. The AIA building’s contractors have been ordered to suspend construction and address the vulnerability.
