TMD Warns of Heavy Rain and Flood Risks as Tropical Storm ‘Nongfa’ Weakens

BANGKOK — The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) has issued a severe weather advisory for northern and northeastern Thailand as Tropical Depression “Nongfa” weakens into a strong low-pressure system and moves across the region. As of 4:00 a.m. on August 31, the system was centered over Loei province, bringing sustained heavy rainfall expected to continue through September 1.

The TMD warned of flash floods and runoff in low-lying areas, near waterways, and along foothills. High-risk provinces include Chiang Mai, Mae Hong Son, Tak, Phitsanulok, Loei, and Udon Thani. Residents in these regions are urged to remain vigilant and prepare for potential flooding.

On August 31, heavy rain is forecast for much of the North, including Chiang Rai and Nan, as well as the Northeast, such as Nong Khai and Khon Kaen. Central provinces like Nakhon Sawan and Kanchanaburi, eastern areas including Rayong and Trat, and southern coastal zones like Phuket, Krabi, and Surat Thani will also experience significant rainfall.

Unsettled conditions will persist on September 1, with strong downpours expected in the Northeast—particularly Loei and Ubon Ratchathani—and eastern provinces such as Sa Kaeo and Chon Buri. Southern coastal areas from Prachuap Khiri Khan to Ranong and Phang Nga will face continued heavy rain.

A strengthened southwest monsoon over the Andaman Sea and Gulf of Thailand will bring rough seas, with wave heights reaching 2–3 meters (exceeding 3 meters in stormy areas). Small boats are advised to remain ashore, and all vessels should exercise extreme caution.

The TMD emphasizes that the situation remains fluid and advises the public to monitor updates closely. Emergency services are on standby to respond to weather-related incidents.
