British Tourist Assaulted in Chiang Mai Karaoke Bar Dispute

Chiang Mai police arrested nine employees of a local karaoke bar yesterday after a violent altercation with a British tourist over an alleged overcharging incident. The confrontation, captured in a now-viral video, shows multiple staff members physically attacking 27-year-old Cameron James Wilkins outside the establishment on Sri Don Chai Road in Chang Khlan district.

The incident unfolded when Wilkins received a bill totaling approximately 20,000 baht for services at the venue, which he refused to pay, claiming the charges were excessive. According to police reports, the disagreement escalated into a physical altercation as Wilkins attempted to leave the premises. The video evidence clearly depicts bar staff restraining the tourist while searching him for valuables.

Authorities confirmed that all nine suspects—eight men and one woman—were taken into custody. During questioning, the employees admitted the altercation stemmed from Wilkins’ refusal to settle the bill but denied any wrongdoing regarding pricing practices.

Local sources revealed the establishment recently changed ownership and primarily caters to foreign tourists, many of whom are brought in by taxi or songthaew drivers allegedly receiving commissions. Neighbors reported frequent police visits to the venue due to recurring disputes over inflated pricing, though officials have not yet confirmed whether they will investigate these broader allegations.

When reporters visited the bar later in the day, the premises appeared closed, with no success in contacting management. The case has reignited concerns about tourist safety and unfair pricing practices in entertainment venues across Chiang Mai’s popular nightlife districts.

Police have vowed a thorough investigation, promising justice for the victim while acknowledging the need to address systemic issues affecting tourist experiences in the area. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the challenges facing Thailand’s crucial tourism industry as it balances hospitality with consumer protection.
