American National Arrested in Phuket for Drug Possession During Police Crackdown
Phuket, May 5, 2025 — A 27-year-old American man was arrested in Kamala on Sunday (May 4) after police discovered methylphenidate, a controlled substance, in his possession during a routine traffic stop.

Officers from Kamala Police Station were conducting systematic crime suppression checks when they flagged down a motorcycle without license plates. The rider, identified as a U.S. citizen, appeared visibly nervous, prompting a search of his belongings.
Inside his shoulder bag, police found five tablets of methylphenidate, a Category 2 controlled substance under Thai law. The drug, commonly used to treat ADHD but classified as illegal without a prescription in Thailand, led to his immediate arrest.
The suspect was taken to Kamala Police Station and charged with unauthorized possession of a controlled substance. If convicted, he could face severe penalties, including imprisonment and hefty fines.

Authorities confirmed that the arrest was part of an ongoing effort to combat drug-related crimes in tourist-heavy areas. “We are increasing inspections to deter illegal activities,” said a Kamala Police spokesperson.
Warning to Tourists
Thai law enforces strict drug regulations, and even prescription medications like methylphenidate require proper documentation.
Public Reaction: “This should serve as a warning—foreigners must respect Thai laws,” said a local business owner.
Possession of controlled substances without authorization can lead to years in prison under Thailand’s Narcotics Act.
