Russian Tour Guides Busted in Phuket and Phang Nga Crackdown
Thai tourist police have nabbed four foreigners – including two Russian nationals – for illegally operating as tour guides in popular southern destinations this week. The arrests come amid a nationwide clampdown on unlicensed tourism operators stealing business from local professionals.

The sting operation saw officers swoop in on two separate locations simultaneously. In Phuket’s Rassada district, authorities caught a Russian man leading a group of tourists at Laem Tukkae Public Beach without proper certification. Just across the bay in Phang Nga’s Takua Thung area, another Russian national was intercepted while conducting tours at Ban Hin Rom Pier.
Investigators also uncovered two travel companies breaking multiple regulations at Wat Khao Khok Kloi Waterfall. The businesses stood accused of three major violations: failing to register tour guide assignments, neglecting to submit required paperwork, and employing unlicensed personnel instead of certified Thai guides.

“These illegal operations hurt our legitimate tourism professionals and potentially put visitors at risk,” explained a Tourist Police Division 3 spokesperson. “Proper licensing exists to ensure quality service and accountability.”
All suspects now face legal action under Thailand’s strict Tourism Business and Guide Act, which carries heavy fines and possible deportation for foreign violators. The arrests form part of broader efforts to clean up the country’s tourism sector ahead of peak travel season.
Authorities are urging travelers to always verify their guides’ credentials by checking for official government-issued ID badges. They warn that unlicensed operators often lack proper insurance and training, potentially leaving tourists vulnerable in emergencies.

Additional raids are planned at major tourist hubs across southern Thailand as officials vow to protect both visitors and local livelihoods. The crackdown has already prompted several illegal operators to cease activities, according to police sources.
