Spanish tourist attacked and gang raped in India

A Spanish tourist was attacked and gang raped in a region of northern India, where she was on vacation with her husband, official sources reported Saturday. The woman, of Brazilian origin with Spanish citizenship, and her husband, also Spanish, were on vacation on a bicycle tour, diplomatic sources confirmed.

According to the version of the authorities, the woman and her husband had set up a tent in Dumka district, a remote area in the state of Jharkhand to spend the night on Friday, when at least seven men attacked them while they were sleeping and raped the woman, according to her husband.

Local sources indicated that she is in an area hospital receiving medical attention. A complaint of assault and gang rape was registered by the local police. Three people have been arrested in connection with the incident, said police sources who requested anonymity.

“It is a condemnable incident and the police are taking appropriate action. The culprits will not be spared,” Mithilesh Kumar Thakur, the regional minister of Jharkhand state, assured the press.

For his part, the victim has shared a story on his Instagram profile from the hospital explaining what had happened to them: “Seven men have raped me, beaten us and robbed us, although not many things, because what they wanted was to rape me. We are in the hospital with the police.”

According to details from several sources consulted, the couple traveled from Spain to make a journey from Pakistan, then on to Bangladesh, India and finally Nepal.
