Remembering Bangkok in the 80s and 90s

This video is a poignant love letter to a bygone era, a time capsule transporting viewers to the heart of Bangkok during the 1980s and 1990s. It’s a collection of moving memories, not meant for profit, but purely for the warmth of recollection.

The film likely opens with a haze of nostalgia, literally and figuratively. The air seems thicker, tinged with the blue-gray smoke from countless two-stroke engines. The soundtrack of the city is a symphony of older, rougher noises: the high-pitched whine of tuk-tuks and motorcycle taxis, the distinct rumble of non-air-conditioned buses, and the constant chorus of street vendors calling out to passersby.

The visuals would paint a picture of a city on the cusp of modernity. Silom Road and Sukhumvit are already bustling arteries, but the skyscrapers are fewer. The Baiyoke Tower II stands tall and new, a proud symbol of the city’s ambitious reach towards the sky. Yet, low-rise shophouses still dominate the landscape, their faded pastel colors and neon signs advertising everything from tailors to herbal remedies.

Street life is raw and unfiltered. Sidewalks are a labyrinth of commerce, packed with food carts selling bowls of noodles for a few baht, and vendors hawking cassette tapes, counterfeit t-shirts, and pirated VHS movies still in their plastic wrappers. People crowd around small tables on plastic stools, the universal dining room of 90s Bangkok.

The traffic is legendary—a seemingly immovable river of cars, where the skill of navigating between lanes was an art form. The first Skytrain (BTS) tracks are under construction, a promise of a future that would forever change the city’s flow.

Glimpses from the 80s would show an even grittier city. Men in high-waisted pants and women with permed hair walk past classic, boxy Toyota Coronas and Honda Civics. The shopping meccas are Mah Boon Krong (MBK), a buzzing new hive of activity, and the grand Sogo Department Store in Pratunam, a landmark of its time.

It’s a Bangkok that feels both familiar and distant. It was a time of slower rhythms, before smartphones and the internet, where life happened on the street corners, in the bustling markets, and in the shared experience of the city’s chaotic, charming growth. This video is a gentle reminder of that time, a digital memory for those who lived it and a window into the soul of Old Bangkok for those who never knew it.
