According to police, the Sri Thawong Tour bus was traveling from Chiang Mai to Bangkok when the driver reportedly encountered an oil slick on the road surface, causing him to lose control. The vehicle skidded and came to rest on its side, blocking all southbound traffic and prompting a large-scale emergency response. A bus hostess recounted that the driver struggled to maintain control moments before the vehicle overturned.

Rescue operations faced significant challenges when an emergency response vehicle collided with a pickup truck while rushing to the scene, causing additional injuries and delays. The incident was further complicated when a utility pole was struck, bringing down power lines and necessitating a temporary electricity shutdown in the area while crews worked to clear the debris.
