Police Arrest Suspect in Vandalism of Spanish Artist’s Mural in Bangkok

BANGKOK – Authorities have apprehended one individual in connection with the extensive defacement of a prominent street art mural in the Charoen Krung 30 alley. The artwork, created by Spanish artist Carolina Adan Caro as part of the “Krung Thep Creative Streets” initiative, was reportedly vandalized with spray paint on Friday night.

Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt visited the site yesterday to assess the damage to the mural, which had taken the artist seven to ten days to complete and was developed in collaboration with the European Union Delegation to Thailand. Expressing his disappointment, Governor Chadchart emphasized that the act constituted not creative expression but criminal destruction of property. “The artwork has an owner, and this act destroys the intention of the people who created it,” he stated.

According to police, closed-circuit television footage captured three suspects at the scene. One individual has since been taken into custody, and authorities are proceeding with charges of property destruction. Under Thai law, the offense carries a potential penalty of up to three years imprisonment and a fine of 60,000 baht. Governor Chadchart has urged police to intensify efforts to locate the remaining suspects and called upon the public to assist in protecting the city’s cultural assets.
