Former PM Thaksin Diagnosed with Neck Bone Deterioration in Bangkok Prison
BANGKOK — Convicted former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra is suffering from cervical spondylosis, a degenerative neck condition, at Klongprem Central Prison, the Department of Corrections confirmed on Sunday. A medical specialist is scheduled to examine the 76-year-old on Monday after initial treatment was delayed due to unavailable expertise.

Deputy Director-General Pol Lt Col Shane Kanchanapach stated that Thaksin developed symptoms last Friday and sought care at the prison’s medical facility. While his overall condition remains stable, he experiences fatigue and body aches common among elderly inmates. Thaksin continues to eat meals normally but will undergo a comprehensive health assessment during the scheduled examination.
The Supreme Court had ordered Thaksin to serve a one-year sentence on September 9, rejecting prior claims of illness that allowed him to remain at Police General Hospital for much of his detention since returning to Thailand in August 2023. He was transferred to Klongprem Central Prison on September 10.
