Typhoon Kajiki Set to Bring Heavy Rain and Flooding to Northern Thailand
BANGKOK — Typhoon Kajiki, the 13th tropical cyclone of the Pacific season, is expected to weaken into a depression by the time it reaches Nan province on Tuesday, delivering up to 200mm of rainfall and triggering potential flooding across northern and northeastern Thailand.
Northeastern Thailand to suffer the wrath of a new typhoon
The Meteorological Department issued warnings Sunday, forecasting intense downpours in the North and Northeast on Monday and Tuesday. Low-lying areas are at high risk of flash floods as the storm moves inland from Vietnam.
In preparation, the National Water Resources Office has increased water discharges from the Sirikit Dam from 40–50 million cubic meters to 55 million cubic meters per day to create additional storage capacity. Discharges into the Chao Phraya River will remain steady at 1,200 cubic meters per second to manage northern runoff and high tides.
The Department of Public Disaster Prevention and Mitigation has activated its cell broadcast system to alert vulnerable communities. However, officials acknowledged that some areas may receive delayed warnings due to insufficient data for comprehensive analysis.
