Thai Army Confirms Cambodian POWs Will Be Released After Conflict Resolution

BANGKOK – The Royal Thai Army has clarified the status of 18 detained Cambodian soldiers, confirming they are being held as prisoners of war (POWs) and will be repatriated once hostilities between Thailand and Cambodia conclude.

Thailand Repatriates Injured Cambodian Soldiers

The detainees were among 20 Cambodian troops who surrendered to Thai forces during military operations in Ban Sam Tae, Kantharalak district of Si Sa Ket province, on July 29. Two wounded soldiers received immediate medical treatment before being sent back to Cambodia, while the remaining 18 are being held in accordance with international protocols.

In an official statement, the Thai army emphasized that the soldiers were removed from combat zones and are being provided with proper food, clothing, and medical care. The designation of “prisoner of war” is not punitive, the army noted, but rather a protected status under the Geneva Conventions, ensuring humane treatment and eventual release when the conflict ends.

The Cambodian government has repeatedly demanded the immediate release of the detained soldiers, but Thailand maintains that their custody follows standard wartime procedures. The Thai army stressed that the POWs are not facing criminal charges and will be repatriated once the border conflict is resolved.

This development comes amid ongoing tensions along the Thai-Cambodian border, where recent clashes have resulted in casualties and displacement. The Thai military has reiterated its commitment to international humanitarian law while continuing defensive operations in the contested zones.

Further updates on the soldiers’ status are expected as diplomatic and military discussions between the two nations continue.
