Thailand Braces for Heavy Rain and Flood Risks as Monsoon Gains Strength
BANGKOK — Thailand is facing a surge in rainfall and rising flood risks as the southwest monsoon intensifies, with the Meteorological Department forecasting widespread downpours from June 7 to 12. The heaviest rain is expected along the Andaman Coast and in the eastern provinces, while Greater Bangkok, the North, and the upper Northeast will also see a sharp increase in precipitation.
Thailand Braces for Severe Monsoon Rains and Flooding
According to data from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), a monsoon trough is moving across upper Thailand, triggering conditions conducive to heavy to very heavy rainfall, particularly in monsoon-prone coastal areas. Authorities have issued warnings for potential flash floods, runoff, and water accumulation in low-lying zones.
Maritime conditions are forecast to deteriorate significantly during this period. The Andaman Sea will see strong winds and waves, and small boats are advised to remain docked. Fishermen and communities along the coast are urged to take extra precautions.

Looking ahead, thunderstorms are expected to persist across upper Thailand from June 13 to 21. Meanwhile, rainfall in the southern region is likely to decrease due to a high-pressure ridge moving in from the southern hemisphere. The department also noted the potential formation of a low-pressure system over the upper South China Sea around June 13, although no tropical cyclones have been detected at this time.
