Thailand Braces for Severe Monsoon Rains and Flooding

BANGKOK – The Thai Meteorological Department has issued a nationwide weather alert, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall from May 25 to 27 as a strong southwest monsoon intensifies over the Andaman Sea and Gulf of Thailand. The department cautioned residents to prepare for potential flash floods and runoff, particularly in low-lying areas and near waterways.

The intensified monsoon conditions, coupled with a strong monsoon trough moving across upper Thailand and the southern region, are expected to bring widespread thunderstorms. Authorities have urged the public to avoid travel through flood-prone zones and exercise extreme caution when driving, especially in landslide-risk areas near hills and riverbanks.

Mariners have been alerted to rough seas, with waves in the upper Andaman Sea reaching up to 2 meters and smaller vessels advised to remain ashore until May 27. The lower Andaman Sea and Gulf of Thailand will also experience choppy conditions, with waves between 1 to 2 meters in storm-affected areas.

While rainfall is expected to ease slightly from May 28 to 31, the risk of flash floods persists, particularly in the north and northeast, where prolonged downpours could trigger further hazards.

Regional forecasts indicate thunderstorms covering 70–80% of northern, central, eastern, and western southern provinces, with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall. The northeast and eastern coastal south will also face significant storm activity, while Greater Bangkok can expect localized intense showers.
