Phuket Braces for Flash Floods as Torrential Rains Lash the Island

Phuket, May 13 – The island province remains on high alert as relentless downpours trigger flood warnings across multiple districts, with emergency teams working around the clock to prevent major disruptions.

Floodwater in Bangkok recedes, but more rain forecast for today

Since early Monday morning, sheets of rain have pounded Phuket Town, Thalang, and Kathu districts, transforming streets into shallow rivers and pushing canal levels toward dangerous thresholds. The Provincial Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office confirmed that Bang Niew Dam Station recorded a staggering 52 millimeters of rainfall within 24 hours – with no signs of the deluge easing.

At Charter Intersection, a critical flood monitoring zone, the Bang Yai Canal has swollen to near-critical levels, threatening to spill onto surrounding roadways. Municipal crews in orange slickers could be seen clearing storm drains and deploying portable pumps throughout the morning, while police redirected traffic away from submerged sections of roads.

Disaster response units have been placed on standby across all three districts, with evacuation protocols prepared for low-lying communities. The Phuket Meteorological Office warns that the current weather system shows no immediate signs of weakening, predicting another 48 hours of heavy precipitation.

Residents along historically vulnerable routes like Chao Fah West Road have begun moving vehicles to higher ground after knee-deep flooding paralyzed the area during last year’s monsoon season. At Phuket International Airport, officials confirmed all flights remain operational but advised travelers to allow extra transit time due to waterlogged access roads.

The continuous rains mark an unusually early intensification of the southwest monsoon, with experts noting this May’s rainfall has already exceeded 70% of the island’s average monthly precipitation. Authorities urge citizens to avoid unnecessary travel and report rising water levels to emergency hotline 1784.
