Cambodian Troops Agree to Withdraw from Thai Border After Talks

UBON RATCHATHANI – Cambodian troops agreed to retreat from the disputed Chong Bok border area in Thailand’s Ubon Ratchathani province following talks between Thai and Cambodian military representatives on Sunday. The agreement comes after escalating tensions that included a deadly clash and a series of retaliatory measures by Thai authorities, the Bangkok Post reported.

Thailand Demands Cambodian Troop Withdrawal, Vows to Defend Border Sovereignty

According to military sources, at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Cambodian soldiers initiated contact with Thai forces stationed at the Chong Bok border in Nam Yuen district, seeking direct discussions with Thailand’s Suranaree Task Force, which oversees the region. The approach was reported to Lt Gen Boonsin Padklang, commander of the Second Army Region, who then secured approval for the meeting from Army Commander-in-Chief Gen Pana Klaewplodthuk.

Following the discussion, both sides agreed to return their troops to positions held in 2024. Cambodian forces also committed to filling in trenches they had dug within the disputed zone. Military representatives from both countries are now expected to meet weekly in the area to maintain communication and prevent further conflict.

Army spokesman Maj Gen Winthai Suvaree confirmed the outcome of the talks and called the agreement a positive step toward easing tensions along the border.

The breakthrough occurred just one day after Thailand began restricting border crossings, including halting the movement of gamblers and limiting the passage of heavy trucks. Reports also emerged that Thai authorities were preparing to cut electricity and internet services to Cambodian areas near the border.

Thailand’s Foreign Ministry later clarified that the restrictions are part of a four-stage response plan triggered by what it called a violation of an earlier agreement. Cambodian soldiers had reportedly entered the contested Chong Bok zone, dug defensive trenches, and engaged in a May 28 skirmish that resulted in at least one fatality.

The ministry warned that the current restrictions could escalate into a complete border closure if further violations occur.

The resolution to pull back troops signals a tentative de-escalation, although both sides remain on alert amid the lingering territorial dispute.
