Coordinated multiple attacks rock Thailand’s southern border provinces

YALA, Thailand – Security authorities reported at least 51 incidents of unrest across Thailand’s three southern border provinces on Saturday night, prompting the military to impose a curfew and increase patrols and security measures across the region. The attacks, which began around 8 p.m. and continued over several hours, involved explosions, gunfire, arson, and damage to property and infrastructure, with authorities ordering all units to urgently inspect and secure the affected areas.

Yala recorded the highest number of incidents, with 18 attacks reported across Raman, Bannang Sata, Than To, and Lam Mai districts, where attackers set tyres on fire at multiple locations, burned a CCTV camera, telecommunications signal towers, and vehicles belonging to administrative organisations. In Bannang Sata, motorcycle tyres were burned at five locations, while a telecommunications mast and a sawmill area were also targeted, and in Than To, arsonists set fire to a government vehicle at the Ban Rae sub-district administrative office and a telecommunications mast at Si Tha Nam village.

Narathiwat recorded 22 incidents across seven districts, including an explosion and gunfire targeting a child development centre in Rangae district, the burning of a sub-district administrative organisation office, and the theft of a pickup truck. Initial reports confirmed that two female civilians were injured by bomb shrapnel in Sungai Padi district and are receiving treatment in hospital and are in a safe condition, while in Cho Airong district, tyres were burned and a DTAC utility pole was blown up. Arson was reported along Highway 42 in Yi-ngo district, while tyres were burned and gunshots fired in Waeng district, with two improvised explosive device attacks reported in Tak Bai district.

Pattani recorded 11 incidents in Yarang, Yaring, and Nong Chik districts, where a garbage truck belonging to a sub-district administrative organisation was set on fire in Yarang, and tyres were burned along Highway 410. In Yaring, gunfire was reported and a suspicious object was placed along Highway 42 near the Bang Pu intersection before an armed robbery at a 7-Eleven convenience store in Bang Pu, which was also hit by an explosion. In Nong Chik, a fire engine belonging to Bang Khao Sub-district Administrative Organisation was set on fire, while attackers also targeted a construction site for a solar power project in Yaring, setting fire to a warehouse storing solar panels, marking the latest attack on energy infrastructure in the region.

Following the attacks, a curfew was imposed from 10:15 p.m. on Saturday until 6 a.m. on Sunday, with residents required to obtain permission from local military, police, or administrative authorities before leaving their homes for urgent matters. The Narathiwat Task Force announced the curfew to allow investigators to conduct thorough examinations of the affected sites and prevent the public from approaching dangerous areas. Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant, avoid targeted areas, and refrain from sharing images, video clips, or information about the positions of security forces on social media, which could interfere with operations to apprehend those responsible.

The attacks, which security analysts attribute to Muslim insurgent groups fighting for an independent Patani state, targeted a wide range of government and private property, including administrative buildings, government vehicles, telecommunication masts, and a convenience store, designed to cause widespread disruption and divert authorities.

The tactics involved setting tyres on fire on main roads, armed robbery, and damaging infrastructure, with attackers spreading out to carry out several types of attacks simultaneously at multiple locations to divert attention. Security units in the affected areas have stepped up surveillance and patrols, with a focus on checking roads and high-risk locations, as authorities closely monitor the situation and work to reassure residents and ensure their safety.
