Malaysia Considers Border Wall with Thailand to Combat Smuggling
Malaysian authorities are evaluating the construction of a border wall along a strategic section of the Thai frontier as part of intensified measures to curb rampant smuggling activities. The proposal, targeting the Kelantan-Narathiwat border zone, comes amid growing concerns over cross-border drug trafficking and illegal migration.

Deputy Home Minister Shamsul Anuar Nasarah confirmed to Bernama news agency that physical barriers, including a potential wall, are being studied alongside technological solutions like CCTV networks and advanced surveillance systems. “All options are being assessed based on operational needs and geographical factors,” he stated during a briefing in Kota Bharu. The announcement follows persistent appeals from Kelantan’s state government for federal intervention to fortify the porous boundary.
The Kolok River, which separates Malaysia’s Kelantan from Thailand’s Narathiwat province, has long served as a smuggling corridor for narcotics, contraband, and undocumented migrants. Recent state-led crackdowns have failed to fully stem the flow of illicit activities, prompting calls for more robust infrastructure. “Our priority is creating an impenetrable, monitored border,” emphasized Shamsul, noting that existing patrols require reinforcement.
The Malaysian government is considering building a new wall on a section of the frontier with Thailand to stamp out illicit drug trafficking and other activities plaguing its border state.

If approved, the project would mark Malaysia’s first physical barrier along its 647-kilometer land border with Thailand. Security analysts warn that such measures could displace smuggling routes rather than eliminate them, potentially escalating tensions in surrounding provinces. The proposal coincides with Thailand’s own efforts to strengthen border surveillance, including drone patrols in Narathiwat following recent insurgent attacks.

Authorities have not disclosed cost estimates or timelines, but the plan is expected to undergo intergovernmental review. The move reflects broader Southeast Asian concerns about transnational crime networks exploiting poorly monitored frontiers.
