Pattaya Woman Faces Charges After Confessing to Fake Robbery Story
PATTAYA – A local department store employee has admitted to inventing a robbery tale to cover up her loss of 32,000 baht and an engagement ring, fearing her British partner’s reaction. The 37-year-old woman, identified only as Ms. R., now faces legal consequences for filing a false police report.
Three Hong Kong tourists arrested for allegedly falsifying robbery complaint
The case began on May 25, 2025, when Ms. R. reported to Banglamung Police Station that three drug-addicted youths on motorcycles had robbed her at knifepoint in Soi Siam Country Club around 11:30 AM. She claimed the assailants stole cash and her engagement ring during the alleged attack.
However, investigators quickly uncovered inconsistencies in her account. Security camera footage from the area showed no signs of the reported robbery, only capturing Ms. R., officers, and journalists at the scene afterward. After repeated failed attempts to reach her for follow-up questions, police summoned Ms. R. for formal questioning.
During interrogation, the emotional suspect broke down and confessed to fabricating the entire story. She explained she had lost the money and ring and created the elaborate hoax to avoid her boyfriend’s anger, intending to use a police report as proof of the supposed crime. The situation spiraled out of control when media outlets picked up the story and accompanied her to the alleged crime scene.
Police confirmed their investigation found no evidence supporting the robbery claims. After reviewing all available CCTV footage and conducting thorough interviews, authorities determined the report was entirely false. Ms. R., who appeared visibly distraught during her confession, offered tearful apologies to officers for wasting police resources and causing unnecessary alarm.
Fake injury-victim reported scamming Bangkok motorists
The case has now been formally processed, with Ms. R. charged with providing false information to law enforcement. Authorities emphasized the seriousness of such offenses, which divert police attention from genuine emergencies and undermine public trust in the justice system.
