A 26-year-old Nigerian man, identified as M. A. M., was arrested in Chumphon province on Saturday morning, March 15th, 2025, after a chaotic incident in front of a convenience store led to his identification as a suspect in a motorcycle theft case.

The incident began when tourist police were alerted to a disturbance in front of the Home Fresh store in tambon Na Thung, Muang district. Witnesses reported that a foreign tourist was causing chaos, destroying property, and behaving erratically.

Upon arrival, officers found M. A. M. in an agitated state. He provided conflicting statements, raising suspicions about his behavior. Police decided to take him to a hospital for observation to assess his condition and ensure public safety.

Shortly after the incident, police from Chaiya district, a nearby area, contacted their counterparts in Muang district, seeking assistance in locating a foreigner who had stolen a motorcycle. The description of the suspect matched that of the African man.

Further investigation revealed that the Nigerian man was indeed the suspect in the motorcycle theft. The stolen bike was recovered, and a search uncovered 16 additional stolen items hidden within it. The items are believed to be linked to other thefts in the area.

M. A. M. was promptly arrested and handed over to Chaiya Police Station for legal action. He faces charges related to motorcycle theft and possession of stolen property. Authorities are also investigating whether he is connected to other criminal activities in the region.

This incident underscores the importance of inter-district police cooperation in addressing crime, particularly in areas with a significant tourist presence. Chumphon, a province known for its scenic beauty and proximity to popular islands like Koh Tao, has seen an increase in tourist-related incidents, prompting authorities to enhance security measures. Authorities have reiterated their commitment to maintaining public safety and ensuring that perpetrators are held accountable under Thai law.

Local residents and business owners have called for increased police patrols and surveillance in high-traffic areas, particularly near convenience stores, markets, and transportation hubs. They have also urged tourists to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to authorities.

The investigation is ongoing, with police working to determine whether the Nigerian man is part of a larger theft ring. The recovered stolen items will be returned to their rightful owners, and further charges may be filed depending on the findings.
