Two Indian Men Arrested for Alleged Sexual Assault of German Woman After Full Moon Party on Koh Phangan

Two Indian nationals were arrested on Friday night, March 14th, 2025, for allegedly sexually assaulting a 24-year-old German tourist following the renowned Full Moon Party on Koh Phangan in Surat Thani province. The incident has sparked widespread attention and raised concerns about safety at one of Thailand’s most famous tourist events.

The alleged assault occurred around 5:40 AM on Thursday, March 13th, near Haad Rin Beach, the iconic venue of the Full Moon Party. The German woman reported the incident to local police, stating that she had been assaulted by two men after consuming a significant amount of alcohol. She described the area as poorly lit, which made it difficult for her to identify her assailants clearly.

Following her complaint, police launched an investigation, collecting evidence from the scene, reviewing CCTV footage, and interviewing witnesses. The two suspects, identified as 47-year-old Vijay and 40-year-old Rahul, were apprehended at a bungalow on the island.

While the investigation is ongoing, one witness provided a conflicting account, claiming to have seen the German woman engaging in consensual sexual activity with a white male tourist on the rocks near the beach shortly before the alleged assault. The witness further stated that the woman later returned to the area with the two Indian men, raising questions about the nature of the encounter.

During questioning, both Indian men denied the allegations, stating that they were unsure of the events and could not recall the details due to intoxication. Police have sent DNA samples from the suspects for testing to determine their involvement in the incident.

Pol Lt Gen Surapong Thanomjit, commissioner of the Provincial Police Region 8, expressed confidence in the investigation, noting that no other suspects were seen leaving the scene in the CCTV footage. He emphasized that the case is being handled with the utmost seriousness to ensure justice is served.

The incident has reignited concerns about safety at the Full Moon Party, a monthly event that attracts thousands of tourists from around the world. While the party is known for its vibrant atmosphere, it has also been criticized for incidents of crime, including theft, assault, and drug-related offenses.

Local authorities have faced pressure to improve security measures, including better lighting, increased police presence, and stricter enforcement of alcohol and drug regulations. This case highlights the need for enhanced safety protocols to protect both tourists and locals.

The German Embassy in Bangkok has been notified of the incident and is providing consular assistance to the victim.

The investigation remains ongoing, with authorities awaiting the results of the DNA tests and continuing to gather evidence. If convicted, the suspects could face severe penalties under Thai law, including lengthy prison sentences.
