Electric Car Erupts In Flames While Charging In Nonthaburi Garage
NONTHABURI, Thailand – An electric vehicle burst into flames while charging in a residential garage in Nonthaburi, leaving the car completely destroyed and damaging a nearby pickup truck in the latest incident raising concerns over EV safety in Thailand. Firefighters from the Khlong Khoi subdistrict administrative organisation rushed to the scene in Pak Kret district on August 5 after receiving an emergency call at 11:30 a.m., arriving to find the sedan fully engulfed in flames.

Crews brought the blaze under control within 10 to 20 minutes, but the electric car had been almost entirely burned out, with flames also spreading to a parked pickup truck and causing heavy damage to its front section and engine compartment. Forensic specialists from Nonthaburi province have since examined the vehicle remains and the destroyed charging equipment, with investigators focusing on whether the fire may have originated at the wall-mounted charger before spreading into the car.
The 54-year-old owner expressed bewilderment at the incident, stating that the vehicle was purchased new from a dealership in April 2025 and that the house wiring had passed inspection by the electricity company prior to delivery.
According to reports, the owner had left home to run errands at the Nonthaburi Provincial Government Centre while the car remained connected to its charger, monitoring the process through a mobile application until receiving a call from his girlfriend informing him the vehicle was on fire. A neighbour reported hearing a muffled explosion before smoke and flames erupted from the vehicle.

The owner insisted that the dealership-installed wall charger had shown no faults and the vehicle had never displayed warning messages or signs of malfunction before the fire. He has demanded the manufacturer take responsibility for the damage caused, as authorities continue their investigation into the exact cause of the blaze, with some sources identifying the vehicle as a BYD Atto 3 and suggesting the charger rather than the high-voltage battery may be the primary source.
