BANGKOK – A senior Thai heritage official has pledged that ancient temples damaged in the ongoing border clashes with Cambodia can be fully restored to their original state, though he stressed that such work must await a return to peace along the frontier.

Tossaporn Srisaman, Director of the Fine Arts Office 10, which oversees historical sites in the lower Northeast, specifically addressed the damage to Prasat Ta Kwai. The temple, reportedly used as a bunker during fighting, suffered significant harm, including the collapse of its spire due to sustained shelling.

“We can confirm that restoration can bring it back to its original state, but we must first wait for the situation to calm down,” Mr. Tossaporn stated.

The Fine Arts Department will establish a committee to conduct comprehensive surveys of all affected historical sites along the Thai-Cambodian border. This includes not only Prasat Ta Kwai but also other significant structures feared to have been damaged, such as Prasat Ta Muen Thom and Prasat Khana. The assessment aims to document the extent of the destruction and prepare for future conservation efforts once security conditions allow.
