Four Cambodian Men Charged in South Korea for Assault on Thai Nationals

BANGKOK – Four Cambodian men have been arrested and formally charged in South Korea for allegedly attacking two Thai nationals with glass bottles, an incident that underscores how tensions from the Thai-Cambodian border conflict are affecting communities abroad. The assault took place on December 7 in Yeongam county, South Jeolla province, resulting in injuries to the Thai victims.

According to authorities, the suspects—all around 30 years old—confirmed the victims’ nationality before carrying out the attack. Despite the Cambodians’ claims that the Thai nationals instigated the confrontation, an investigation led to their arrest and indictment on charges of group assault resulting in injury. Prosecutors have denied bail, citing the severity of the charges and the heightened regional tensions.

The incident has been widely linked to the ongoing military clashes along the Thai-Cambodian border, which have resulted in over 41 reported casualties—22 Thais and 19 Cambodians. These hostilities have stirred unrest among migrant communities in South Korea, raising concerns about safety and communal friction.

The suspects remain in custody as legal proceedings continue.
