Upon arrival, officers and hotel staff found the room locked from the inside with a security chain. Gaining entry via the fourth-floor balcony using the fire escape, they discovered the man, identified only as Mr. L. from Germany, in a kneeling position at the foot of the bed with his hands and head resting on the mattress. He was shirtless and appeared to have been dead for several hours.

According to the hotel housekeeper, a Myanmar national, she had attempted to clean the room in the morning but received no response after knocking. The investigation was prompted later when a friend of the deceased notified the hotel that he could not reach him by phone.
