Facebook User Arrested for Sparking Panic with False Border News in Ubon Ratchathani

UBON RATCHATHANI — A 32-year-old woman has been arrested in Ubon Ratchathani for allegedly spreading false information about Thai-Cambodian border violence that police say incited public fear and confusion.

Thailand, Cambodia Reaffirm Peaceful Path on Border Issues

The woman, who posted under the pseudonym “Lucky Farm” on Facebook, was taken into custody following the issuance of a warrant by the provincial court. Authorities accuse her of publishing fabricated claims that included reports of border explosions, multiple deaths, and mass evacuations — none of which were confirmed by official sources.

The posts quickly gained traction online, with widespread sharing and reactions from concerned users, which authorities said fueled unnecessary panic among local residents.

Officers searched her home in Mueang district and confiscated her mobile phone as part of the investigation. She was formally charged under the Computer Crimes Act for importing false information into a computer system in a way that could threaten national security or public safety. The offense carries a penalty of up to five years in prison and/or a fine of up to 100,000 baht.

During questioning, the suspect told police she had seen the content online and shared it without verifying its truthfulness, adding that she received no financial gain from the activity.

Police have reiterated that while freedom of expression is respected, spreading false or unverified information — particularly during sensitive times — poses real dangers to public order and must be addressed.
