Thailand Suspends Bus Services to Cambodia Amid Heightened Border Restrictions
BANGKOK, June 9 — Thailand’s state-run Transport Company has suspended its daily international bus routes from Bangkok to Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, effective immediately, citing ongoing border crossing restrictions due to rising tensions between Thailand and Cambodia.

The decision halts round-trip services that previously departed Bangkok each morning, with buses to Siem Reap leaving at 9 a.m. and to Phnom Penh at 8 a.m. Return trips were scheduled for the same time from each Cambodian city. The 419-kilometre journey to Siem Reap was priced at 750 baht, while the 719-kilometre ride to Phnom Penh cost 900 baht.
The suspension follows Thailand’s recent moves to tighten border control amid escalating disputes with Cambodia over territory near the Chong Bok area. In response, the Royal Thai Army has briefed military attachés from 42 countries based in Bangkok about the situation, emphasizing its efforts to de-escalate the conflict.

Despite a newly reached agreement for both Thai and Cambodian troops to pull back from disputed zones, anxiety remains among border communities. Residents of Ban Nong Kanna village in Phnom Dongrak district, Surin province, expressed cautious relief over the troop withdrawal, though many remain on alert.
Sayam Saenkaew, the village head, said some locals continue to dig trenches and prepare bunkers for protection, drawing from traumatic memories of past skirmishes in 1986 and 2001. Still, daily life carries on for many. The village school remains open, with around 400 students attending classes as usual.
