Cambodian Soldier Killed in Border Clash with Thai Troops

A Cambodian soldier was killed in a morning clash between Cambodian and Thai forces near the disputed border area, according to an official statement released today by Cambodia’s Ministry of National Defence. The confrontation occurred in a disputed area near Chong Bok in Nam Yuen district of Ubon Ratchathani.

Cambodian authorities accused Thai troops of launching an unprovoked attack on a long-held Cambodian military position, calling the incident a “tragic and unwarranted escalation.” The ministry stressed that Cambodia had no desire for conflict and would engage in discussions with Thai defense officials to restore stability and prevent future clashes.

Reaffirming its commitment to peaceful resolution, the ministry emphasized the importance of maintaining cooperation along the border while vowing to defend Cambodia’s territorial integrity “at all costs.” The body of the fallen soldier has been transported from the border for funeral arrangements.

Amid rising tensions, the ministry warned against the spread of unverified information on social media, cautioning that false reports could worsen border insecurity and damage bilateral relations. The public was urged to rely only on official statements.

Earlier, Cambodian army spokesperson Mao Phalla stated that Cambodian troops were on a routine patrol when Thai forces opened fire. However, the Thai military offered a conflicting account, claiming Cambodian soldiers had entered a disputed zone. Thai authorities said their troops attempted to negotiate but were met with gunfire, prompting a defensive response. The Thai side reported no casualties.

The clash took place before 6 a.m. on Wednesday in the forested Chong Bok area of Ubon Ratchathani province, Thailand—a region with overlapping territorial claims and no clear demarcation. Both nations have historically faced tensions over border disputes, particularly around the Preah Vihear temple area. Authorities on both sides are expected to hold further discussions to de-escalate the situation.
