Thailand Rolls Out Mandatory Digital Arrival Cards for All Foreign Visitors Starting May 1

BANGKOK — In a sweeping modernization of its immigration system, Thailand will require all foreign travelers to complete a Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) before entering the country beginning May 1, 2025. The move permanently replaces the decades-old paper TM6 forms that once clogged airport immigration lines, ushering in a new era of digital border management—though key questions about implementation remain unanswered just weeks before launch.

Online TM6 Form for Visitors to Thailand Launching on May 1

The free online form, accessible via tdac.immigration.go.th, demands travelers submit passport details, flight information, and accommodation addresses up to three days before arrival. Successful applicants will receive a confirmation—likely a QR code—to present at immigration checkpoints. While officials promise the system will slash processing times, the late-March soft launch has left many wondering how last-minute arrivals or tech glitches will be handled. “We’re testing self-service kiosks as a backup,” admitted Immigration Bureau spokesperson Colonel Thanathip Sawangsaeng, acknowledging gaps in the rollout plan.

The TDAC’s debut fuels speculation about Thailand’s long-delayed 300-baht tourist tax, which may finally launch later this year. Though not yet integrated, the digital system could eventually automate collection of the controversial fee—meant to fund visitor insurance and infrastructure—during the pre-arrival process.

For now, the clock ticks for hotels, airlines, and tour operators scrambling to educate clients. “No more scribbling forms mid-flight,” said Suvarnabhumi Airport manager Kittipong Kittikachorn, recalling TM6 chaos during peak hours. But with neighboring Malaysia and Vietnam watching closely, Thailand’s digital gamble could redefine Southeast Asian border control—if it works.
