Miracle Rescue in Bangkok as Worker Pulled Alive from Quake Rubble

BANGKOK — In a dramatic predawn operation that had rescuers cheering through their masks, Thai emergency teams pulled a survivor from the wreckage of a collapsed government building, more than 36 hours after a catastrophic earthquake turned the construction site into a death trap.

The miraculous rescue came as the death toll rose to 14, with 23 injured and 89 still missing in what has become Bangkok’s worst structural disaster in decades. Video footage shows the moment dust-covered responders in orange helmets carefully extracted the worker—whose identity remains undisclosed—from a narrow void in the pancaked concrete, their arms raised in triumph as medics rushed forward with a stretcher.

“He was conscious when we found him, pinned between two beams that somehow protected him,” said rescue team leader Colonel Narongchai Kittisarn, wiping sweat from his brow. The survivor reportedly managed to drink some water before being rushed to nearby Bhumibol Adulyadej Hospital with severe dehydration but stable vital signs.

The 7.7-magnitude quake that originated in Myanmar’s Mandalay region on Friday afternoon continues to haunt the Thai capital, where aftershocks as strong as 4.6 rattled nerves again overnight. At the Chatuchak district collapse site, the air remains thick with concrete dust as teams using thermal drones and seismic listening devices have now identified at least eight more potential survivor clusters beneath the rubble.

“We’re drilling small shafts to deliver oxygen and water while working on extraction tunnels,” explained Disaster Response Department chief Suriyan Ratchaphol, pointing to a complex 3D map of the wreckage. “Every hour, the structural integrity worsens, but we won’t stop while there’s still hope.”

The rescued worker’s survival has ignited fresh determination among the 400+ personnel rotating through the site, where cranes lift away debris piece by painstaking piece. International aid has begun arriving, including Japanese search dogs and Singaporean structural specialists, even as Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt announced expanded building inspections across the metropolis.

As Sunday’s tropical sun beat down on the disaster zone, families of the missing maintained their vigil at a makeshift relief center nearby. Many clutch photographs of loved ones—mostly migrant construction workers from Myanmar and Cambodia—as Buddhist monks chant prayers that more miracles might emerge from the ruins.

With the critical 72-hour survival window closing fast, every shout of “Clear!” from the rubble sends hearts racing. As one rescuer put it: “We’re not just moving concrete. We’re fighting against time itself.”
