Royal Thai Police Denies Deporting Uyghurs to China

The Royal Thai Police have refuted allegations that Thailand has deported Uyghur individuals back to China, following mounting concerns from human rights organizations and international observers. The statement, issued on January 22, 2025, aims to address claims that Uyghurs detained in Thailand were forcibly returned to face persecution.

A police spokesperson emphasized that Thailand adheres to international human rights standards, particularly regarding refugees and asylum seekers.

“We confirm that no Uyghur detainees have been deported to China. Thailand remains committed to ensuring their safety and respecting their human rights,” the spokesperson said.

Approximately 50 Uyghurs remain in Thai detention centers, where they have been held since 2014. The detainees were part of a group that fled Xinjiang, China, citing religious and ethnic persecution.

In 2015, Thailand deported 109 Uyghurs to China, sparking widespread international criticism and protests from Uyghur advocacy groups. The deportations led to diplomatic tensions, with some accusing Thailand of bowing to Chinese pressure.

The Thai government has historically faced challenges in balancing its diplomatic relations with China and its obligations to international human rights laws. Thailand is not a signatory to the 1951 Refugee Convention, complicating its approach to asylum seekers.

Human rights groups, including Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, continue to monitor the treatment of Uyghurs in Thai detention centers, urging transparency and adherence to international norms.

The Thai government has reiterated its position as a neutral party, emphasizing that any decision regarding Uyghur detainees will consider humanitarian principles and international obligations.
