Their Majesties the King and Queen preside over Royal Cremation for Princess Bejaratana

BANGKOK, 9 April 2012 (NNT) – Their Majesties the King and Queen, accompanied by members of the Royal Family, this evening laid sandalwood flowers at the funeral pyre for Her Royal Highness Princess Bejaratana, in a symbolic cremation for the late Princess.

Their Majesties the King and Queen arrived at the Royal Merit- Making Pavilion within the Sanam Luang crematory ground at 16.30 hr.

His Majesty then lighted joss sticks and candles at the Buddhist shrine, and graciously allowed His Royal Highness Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn to proceed to the royal crematorium to light candles at the royal offerings to the royal remains. The chief monk of the ceremony gave a sermon, and 50 titled monks chanted blessings. His Royal Highness presented gifts to the chief titled monk and presented saffron robes to the monks who chanted prayers.

Their Majesties the King and Queen then proceeded to the royal crematorium and performed the symbolic cremation, as court musicians sounded their instruments. Guards of honor from the three armed forces saluted, and 21 gun salutes were fired from cannons in honor of the occasion.

Their Majesties the King and Queen took their seats at the front balcony of the Royal Merit-Making Pavilion, allowing other members of the Royal Family to lay sandalwood flowers. Performing their part, thereafter, were titled monks, other members of the Royal Family, members of the Privy Council, court presidents, Election Commissioners, presidents of independent organizations, the Prime Minister and members of the Cabinet, the Parliament President, the Opposition leader, members of diplomatic corps, religious leaders, and high-ranking military, police and civil servants.

At about 18.45 hr Their Majesties the King and Queen departed the ceremonial ground and will proceed to the Royal Crematorium again at 22.00 hr for the actual royal cremation.
