CHIANG RAI, 7 March 2012 (NNT) – The Meteorological Department’s Seismological Bureau of Thailand reported a mild tremor in the northern province of Chiang Rai this morning. However, it was barely felt by the locals.
According to the Seismological Bureau, at 1.18 hrs today, a small earthquake with a magnitude of 2.2 on the Richter scale was recorded in Wiang Pa Pao district of Chiang Rai province.
Mr Chatetha Mosikkarat, head of the Chiang Rai Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office, said it was the second time an earthquake occurred in the area this year. There were no reports of damage.
Mr Chatetha confirmed that all related provincial offices and agencies have been conducting earthquake drills, providing lectures on disaster preparedness, as well as ensuring that the province’s infrastructure is sufficiently earthquake-resistant.
