British man faces jail over Thailand protests

A British man faces two years jail in Thailand after being filmed taking part in the anti-government protests in Bangkok last month.

Jeff Savage, of Tonbridge, Kent, was captured on video encouraging protesters to set fire to the Central World shopping centre.

The footage was widely circulated on the internet and the shopping centre was later torched and looted.

Mr Savage, 48, wearing the black combat clothing of Red Shirt’s guards, a black bandanna and wielding a large stick, said: “We’re gonna loot everything, gold, watches, everything, and then we’re gonna burn it to the ground.”

On Thursday, manacled in leg-irons in court, Mr Savage screamed abusive comments, calling prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva “a murderer” and insulting his wife. He also expressed dismay at missing the World Cup.
