Thailand Accuses Cambodia of Using Civilians to Provoke Border Clashes
SA KAEO — The chief of staff of Thailand’s First Army Region, Maj. Gen. Suravich Daengchan, publicly condemned Cambodia on Thursday for allegedly using women, children, and monks to escalate tensions along the disputed border near Sa Kaeo province. The accusations follow a violent confrontation on Wednesday where Thai forces used tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse Cambodian protesters attempting to dismantle newly erected barbed wire fencing.

The incident occurred in Ban Nong Ya Pong and Ban Nong Chan villages, where Cambodian civilians—reportedly accompanied by Cambodian police and troops—gathered to protest the fencing. Maj. Gen. Suravich claimed Cambodian authorities not only failed to intervene but actively supported efforts to breach the border barriers. Protesters allegedly fired slingshots at Thai troops, prompting the use of crowd control measures deemed “standard under international protocols.”
Suravich emphasized that the barbed wire installations aim to prevent illegal encroachment into Thai territory and accused Cambodian officials of spreading distorted narratives about the clashes. He announced that police reinforcements would be deployed to guard the fence and arrest anyone attempting to damage it.
