Man Sets Himself on Fire at Bangkok Bus Stop, Causing Panic and Injury

BANGKOK – A 21-year-old man inflicted severe self-harm by setting himself on fire at a bus stop on Phahon Yothin Road on Tuesday morning, creating a scene of panic that resulted in an additional injury. The incident occurred around 10 a.m. at a bus stop in front of the Land Development Department office in the Chatuchak district, the Bangkok Post reported.

Surveillance footage from the scene captured the man standing behind the bus stop shelter holding a large jar containing a liquid, believed to be petrol. He was seen pouring the liquid over his body before igniting it with a lighter. While engulfed in flames, he walked towards the roadside, terrifying two university students who were waiting for a bus, before stumbling onto the road and collapsing to the ground beneath the Senanikom BTS Station.

The shocking sight of the burning man caused immediate distress among motorists. One motorcyclist, startled by the scene, fell from his bike and sustained injuries. Emergency responders rushed both the severely burned man and the injured motorcyclist to the nearby Paolo Hospital for treatment. The condition of the man who set himself on fire remains unknown.

A witness informed police that the man had been engaged in a heated telephone conversation just prior to the incident. His mother later confirmed to authorities that her son had been experiencing relationship problems with his girlfriend over the preceding few days. The investigation into the precise circumstances surrounding the event is ongoing.
