According to the chief of the Wichit police station, the chain-reaction accident was initiated by a truck carrying construction piles that experienced a braking malfunction while descending into the underpass. The out-of-control truck smashed into the vehicles ahead of it, triggering a cascade of collisions. The force of the impact sent several struck vehicles careening into the opposite lane, where they were subsequently hit by oncoming traffic. Other cars involved in the initial crash collided with concrete barricades lining the tunnel.

In response to these ongoing safety concerns, infrastructure improvements are currently underway. These enhancements include replacing damaged lighting with new LED systems, installing upgraded CCTV cameras, and implementing measures to improve the overall resilience of the structure.
