Fifteen-Vehicle Pileup Blocks Key Phuket Underpass Following Truck Brake Failure

PHUKET – A major underpass in Phuket’s Muang district was brought to a standstill on Tuesday following a significant collision involving fifteen vehicles. The incident, which occurred around noon at the Darasamut intersection underpass, resulted in one person sustaining minor injuries.

According to the chief of the Wichit police station, the chain-reaction accident was initiated by a truck carrying construction piles that experienced a braking malfunction while descending into the underpass. The out-of-control truck smashed into the vehicles ahead of it, triggering a cascade of collisions. The force of the impact sent several struck vehicles careening into the opposite lane, where they were subsequently hit by oncoming traffic. Other cars involved in the initial crash collided with concrete barricades lining the tunnel.

Police reported that all available tow trucks in Phuket were summoned to the scene to clear the damaged vehicles and restore traffic flow through the critical artery as quickly as possible. Among the fifteen damaged vehicles, one individual was reported to have suffered chest pain and was transported to Vachira Phuket Hospital for medical treatment.

The Darasamut intersection underpass has gained notoriety as the site of frequent accidents, with local media reports often attributing the dangers to inadequate lighting within the tunnel. In response to these ongoing safety concerns, infrastructure improvements are currently underway. These enhancements include replacing damaged lighting with new LED systems, installing upgraded CCTV cameras, and implementing measures to improve the overall resilience of the structure.
