Thai-Cambodian Border Tensions Ease as Military Talks Resume

UBON RATCHATHANI – Routine discussions between Thai and Cambodian military officers have helped de-escalate border tensions in the disputed Emerald Pagoda area, according to Lt Gen Boonsin Padklang, commander of Thailand’s Second Army Region. Speaking today, he confirmed that field officers from both sides have agreed to hold informal talks every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday to prevent further armed conflict.

Cambodia breaks promise on border issues: Thai foreign ministry

Lt Gen Boonsin emphasized that while the current military-level dialogue has improved stability, a higher-level discussion between Thai and Cambodian leaders would further ease tensions and send a positive signal to troops stationed along the border. He reiterated that Thai forces have no intention of engaging in renewed hostilities with Cambodia but remain fully prepared to defend Thai territory if necessary.

Expressing cautious optimism, the commander stated his confidence that the situation will continue improving, with lasting peace achievable before his mandatory retirement at the end of September.

In a related development, Lt Gen Boonsin disclosed ongoing infrastructure projects aimed at boosting security and tourism in the border region. An army engineering unit is currently constructing roads leading to Phu Chong-Na Yoi National Park and Yod Dome Wildlife Sanctuary in Ubon Ratchathani. Additionally, a demining team has been clearing landmines along the K-5 route near the Cambodian border—a critical step in reopening roads abandoned since 2011.

The commander stressed the importance of improving border road conditions, noting that enhanced infrastructure would not only facilitate military operations but also support economic and tourism activities in the area. The latest developments mark a significant shift toward stability after years of intermittent clashes in the contested border zone.
