Thai Army Mobilizes Burapha Task Force Amid Rising Tensions with Cambodia
SA KAEO — Thailand’s Burapha Task Force has been mobilized and redeployed to a police compound in the border province of Sa Kaeo in a strategic show of readiness, following a deadly confrontation with Cambodian troops in a disputed border zone. The move underscores growing military alertness as Thai authorities brace for any escalation along the shared frontier.

Major General Benchapon Dechatiwong na Ayutthaya, commander of the task force, confirmed that the relocation of troops and weapons was carried out to reinforce public confidence. He emphasized that the army is prepared to act immediately should the situation along the Thai-Cambodian border deteriorate further. The general assured residents in the area that the military stands ready to defend them.
“If a border conflict breaks out, our troops and equipment are fully prepared to respond and ensure the safety of the people,” he said, following the high-profile redeployment.
Photos and videos of the troop movements spread rapidly across Thai media and social platforms, drawing widespread support for the army and reigniting criticism of Cambodia. The development follows a brief but deadly exchange of gunfire between Thai and Cambodian forces on May 28 in a contested area, during which a Cambodian sergeant was reportedly killed, according to Cambodian military sources.

The fatal clash has deepened the strain in Thai-Cambodian relations and prompted immediate talks among military leaders from both nations. An urgent meeting resulted in a temporary agreement for both sides to pull back from the disputed location, with a joint committee scheduled to assess the area and review the situation on the ground.
Despite this diplomatic effort, signs suggest that the dispute could escalate further on the international stage. Former Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen has reportedly advocated taking the issue to the International Court of Justice (ICJ), insisting that the contested land belongs to Cambodia.
The area in question has long been a flashpoint between the two nations, with historical claims and past military stand-offs complicating the issue. For now, both militaries appear to be maintaining a fragile calm, but the rapid military deployments and political posturing reflect the volatile nature of the border dispute.
