BANGKOK, Thailand – The Meteorological Department has issued a warning for heavy to very heavy rain across much of the country from Sunday through Wednesday, with officials advising residents in vulnerable areas to prepare for potential flash floods, overflows, and landslides. Director-general Sugunyanee Yavinchan said rainfall would increase during the four-day period as a monsoon trough moves across the North and upper Northeast, while a rather strong southwest monsoon prevails over the Andaman Sea, Thailand, and the Gulf of Thailand.

Heavy Rain Warning Issued for Upper Thailand

The heaviest downpours are expected in the western parts of the North and Central region, the upper and eastern parts of the Northeast, and the East, with authorities urging people living near foothills, waterways, and low-lying areas to remain on high alert for accumulated rainfall that could trigger sudden flooding. Officials have also advised travellers to avoid routes with recurring flood problems, particularly in low-lying locations where temporary waterlogging may occur.

Marine conditions are expected to be hazardous, with waves in the upper Andaman Sea reaching two to three metres and exceeding three metres during thunderstorms. Small boats in the upper Andaman Sea have been advised to remain ashore throughout the warning period, while all vessels in the Andaman Sea and Gulf of Thailand should navigate with caution and avoid areas affected by thunderstorms.

The warning covers the period from August 29 to September 2, with authorities urging the public to plan daily activities and travel carefully to minimise risks and disruption.
