The clashes have heightened tensions in the region, with Thai military sources confirming the intensification of hostilities.
Border Clashes Escalate at Thai-Myanmar Border
According to a report from the Ratchamanu Task Force, the KNLA used drones to drop seven bombs on the Myanmar military’s Pu Loo Too operational base in Hpa-an, Karen State. The base is located approximately 800 meters from the Thai border, directly opposite Thailand’s Tha Song Yang district in Tak province. The drone strikes marked a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict between the KNLA, an armed wing of the Karen ethnic group, and the Myanmar military.
In response to the drone attacks, the Myanmar military deployed a YAK-130 aircraft to conduct airstrikes on KNLA positions around the Pu Loo Too base. The retaliatory strikes aimed to defend the military’s position and push back against the KNLA’s offensive. The exchange of fire has created a volatile situation along the border, with Thai military personnel remaining on high alert to ensure the safety of local residents and prevent any violation of Thai sovereignty.

The fighting has also led to a continued influx of Myanmar refugees crossing the border into Thailand. As of 5 p.m. on Saturday, March 2nd, 65 refugees had returned to Myanmar, while more than 400 remained in Thailand. The refugees, many of whom are fleeing the violence and instability in Karen State, have sought shelter in Thai border communities, where local authorities and humanitarian organizations are working to provide assistance.
The Thai military has maintained a strong presence along the border to monitor the situation and prevent any spillover of the conflict into Thai territory. The ongoing clashes highlight the fragile security situation in the region and the challenges faced by both Myanmar and Thailand in managing the humanitarian and geopolitical consequences of the conflict.
As tensions remain high, the international community is closely watching the developments along the Thai-Myanmar border. The use of drones and airstrikes in the conflict underscores the evolving nature of warfare in the region and the increasing sophistication of armed groups like the KNLA. Meanwhile, the plight of refugees continues to draw attention to the human cost of the conflict, with calls for a peaceful resolution growing louder.
