Phuket speedboat driver tests positive for drugs after crash that killed Russian 5-year-old girl

In a devastating incident off the southern island of Phuket, a speedboat carrying Russian tourists collided with rocks, resulting in the tragic death of a five-year-old Russian girl and injuries to nine others. Authorities have reported that the boat’s driver, tested positive for amphetamines, raising concerns about drug involvement in the accident.

Phuket’s deputy health chief revealed that an initial test on the 41-year-old boat driver showed the presence of substances in the amphetamine category. While the boat crew is also undergoing drug testing, results are pending.

The twin-engine boat was returning seven Russian tourists from the Phi Phi islands to Phuket when it collided with rocks near Koh Mai Thon island at high speed around 3:20 pm on Sunday. Despite favorable weather conditions, the impact was severe, resulting in the death of the young Russian girl and injuries to seven other tourists, the driver, and the boat attendant.

Among the injured, a 45-year-old Russian woman suffered a punctured liver and broken pelvis, a Russian man had ruptured lungs, and a three-year-old Russian child sustained a head injury. The driver, sustained multiple facial wounds and is currently in critical condition, dependent on a respirator with the need for an operation.

As investigations unfold, authorities are grappling with the aftermath of the tragic incident, emphasizing the need for thorough examinations to determine the exact cause of the crash and the role of drugs in the driver’s impairment.
