A 6.2 magnitude earthquake that struck early this morning in Gansu, about 5 kilometres from the provincial border with Qinghai in northwest China, has left hundreds of people dead and injured.

The quake was particularly felt in Lanzhou, capital of Gansu province. University students were shaken out of their dormitories by the tremor, according to a post on social media showing images of young people standing outside.
As a result of the quake, buildings and infrastructure have suffered varying degrees of damage, causing water, power and road outages, according to Xinhua.
Hundreds of people have been killed or injured after a powerful earthquake in northwest China's Gansu and Qinghai Province.

Rescue services are carrying out search and rescue work, as well as relocating victims and checking infrastructure. Authorities have raised the national emergency response level to two.
Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for all possible search and rescue efforts to be made to minimise the number of casualties.
China’s Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Emergency Management have allocated 250 million yuan (about 30 million euros) in reconstruction aid after the earthquake damaged some 155,000 homes, according to official media.
