Wat Phra Samut Chedi is a magnificent temple located not far from Bangkok, in Samut Prakan, a province created during the Ayutthaya period. The Phra Samut Chedi was built in 1827 by king Buddha Loetla Nabhalai (Rama II) on an island in Pak Khlong Bang Pla Kot, on the banks of the Chao Phraya river, but the temple remained unfinished.

The construction was resumed during the reign of his son King Jessadabodindra (Rama III) who completed a 20-meter-high pagoda. After a few years King Mongkut (Rama IV) increased the height of the Chedi to 38 meters.

Since it’s situated on a island hence the name Phra Samut Chedi or “Chedi in the middle of the water”.
